Presentation of the invited article of the SORT journal on “scatter search”

The Catalan Statistics Society and the SORT journal (Statistics and Operations Research Transactions) are organizing the presentation of the invited article of volume 50 of the journal (January–June 2026), entitled "Scatter search: foundations and implementations", by Manuel Laguna, Sergio Cavero, and Rafael Martí.

The event, which will take place on Tuesday, June 30 (10:30 a.m.) in the Pere i Joan Coromines Hall at the Institute for Catalan Studies, will be given by Rafael Martí. The presentation can be followed in person or online via the link .

The article provides a comprehensive review of the “scatter search” algorithm, a population-based metaheuristic designed to solve complex optimization problems through structured solution combination and adaptive memory. The article reviews the historical evolution of the methodology, its main components, and its applications in areas such as scheduling, routing, bioinformatics and software engineering. It also examines its most recent extensions, including integration with machine learning techniques, and includes a practical Python tutorial for 0–1 knapsack related problems.

The SORT journal, jointly published by Idescat and various academic institutions, is a leading international publication in the fields of statistics and operations research. Through this initiative, Idescat contributes to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and to fostering exchange among the research and professional community.
