Consumer Confidence Index. 05/2026

The Consumer Confidence Index for Catalonia reached a value of 79.6 in May 2026, which represents an increase of 3.1 percentage points compared to one month ago and a decrease of 6.6 points compared to May 2025.

This Index is based on the assessment that consumers make of the current situation compared to six months ago, and of expectations for the next six months, taking into account the following three components: the household economy, the labour market and the general economy.

Regarding the household economy confidence index, it reached a value of 96.9, a figure that represents an increase of 5.3 points compared to the month of April, but a decrease of 2.8 points compared to one year ago (May 2025). Regarding expectations in the household economy, it is the only index valued above 100, with a value of 106.8 (4.6 points more compared to the month of April 2026 and 3.3 points less in year-over-year terms).

In relation to the index of confidence in the labour, it reached a value of 75.9, which represents an decrease both compared to April 2026 (−0.4 points) and in year-over-year terms (−7.7 points).

As for confidence in the general economy, the index reached a value of 66.0, the lowest assessment of the three components, a fact that has been repeated since October 2024. This value is an increase of 4.3 points over the figure for April 2026, but a decrease of 9.3 points compared to the same month last year (May 2025).

In May 2026, the assessment of the situation compared to six months ago showed an index of 74.9, a figure 3.4 points higher than the index reached the previous month (April 2026). This figure is explained by the positive trend in confidence regarding two of the three components. In this regard, confidence in the household economic situation and in the general economy rose by 6.1 points and 7.0 points, respectively, compared to the previous month. In contrast, confidence in the labor market fell by 3.0 points.

In year-over-year terms, the assessment of the current situation recorded a decrease of 5.1 points. This result is the product of the negative trend, although with different intensities, of the three components compared to May 2025: confidence in the general economy (−7.2 points), the labour market situation (−5.9 points) and the household economic situation (−2.2 points).

In relation to the next six months, the consumer confidence expectations index in May 2026 recorded a value of 84.4, an increase of 2.9 points compared to April 2026. This increase, as is the case with the confidence index in the current situation, reflects the slightly positive trend in all components: the expectations in the household economy increased by 4.6 points compared to the previous month, expectations in the labour market increased by 2.4 points, and expectations for the general economy increased by 1.7 points.

In year-over-year terms, that is, compared to May 2025, the expectations index decreased by 8.0 points. This behaviour is explained by the negative trend of varying intensity in the three components. In this regard, expectations in the household economy fell t by 3.3 points year over year, while expectations in the general economy and expectations in the labour market did so more sharply (−11.3 points and −9.3 points, respectively).
