Statistics on Divorces, Separations and Annulments. 2025

In 2025, 13,563 marital breakdowns (divorces, separations and annulments) were recorded in Catalonia. This figure represents a 5.7% decrease compared with 2024. Specifically, there were 13,137 divorces, 423 separations and 3 annulments.

Divorces account for 96.9% of all breakdowns, separations for 3.1% and annulments for less than 0.1%. Both divorces and separations show a decrease compared with the previous year, of 5.2% and 19.6% respectively.

By province, Lleida recorded the highest proportion of divorces (98.6%), while Tarragona had the lowest (96.2%). On the other hand, separations reached the highest percentage in Tarragona (3.8%) and the lowest in Lleida (1.4%).

For the first time, information is being published on divorces by sex of the spouses. Of all divorces, 12,780 (97.3%) were between spouses of different sexes and 356 (2.7%) between spouses of the same sex. Of these, 145 corresponded to marriages between men and 211 to marriages between women. Compared with 2024, divorces between spouses of different sexes and divorces between men decreased, while divorces between women increased.

Regarding the length of marriage, 31.2% of divorces corresponded to couples who had been married for 20 years or more. In contrast, only 3.0% of divorces corresponded to marriages of less than 2 years’ duration. Between these two extremes, 22.4% of divorces were recorded among marriages of 5 to 9 years, 17.7% among those of 10 to 14 years and 15.0% among those of 15 to 19 years.

Among divorces of couples of different sexes, the highest incidence was recorded in the age group of 40 to 49 years, for both men and women. Regarding nationality, 81.7% of men and 81.8% of women held Spanish nationality, while 18.3% and 18.2%, respectively, held foreign nationality.

According to marital status prior to marriage, most divorced spouses of different sexes were single (88.2% of men and 89.1% of women). Divorced men and women accounted for 11.4% and 10.6%, respectively, while widowers and widows made up only 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively.

47.7% of the marriages that ended in divorce had no children, 41.4% had minor children, 7.0% had both minor children and financially dependent adult children, and 3.8% had only dependent adult children.

Among divorces between spouses of different sexes with minor children, shared custody was the predominant arrangement (63.2%), followed by sole custody by the mother (33.8%) and by the father (2.6%). Custody exercised by other persons accounted for 0.4%.

In divorces between spouses of different sexes, child support was established in 53.0% of cases. Payment fell to the father in 41.8% of cases, to the mother in 3.5%, and to both parents in 54.7%.
