The Indicators of Service Sector Activity are short-term indicators used to measure the evolution of the activity of companies operating in the service sector in Catalonia. These indicators include the Turnover Index in the Service Sector and the Production Index in the Service Sector.
The Turnover Index in Service Sector is a short-term indicator used to measure the evolution of the activity of non-financial market service companies in Catalonia through the turnover variable. As a value index, it measures the joint evolution of quantities, quality and prices.
Idescat produces the general index for the sector on a monthly basis, and calculates the Catalan indices for the trade sector and for the other services. In accordance with the Catalan Classification of Economic Activity 2009 (CCAE-2009), the other services are disaggregated by the following sectors: transport and storage, hostelry, information and communications, professional, scientific and technical activities, and administrative activities and auxiliary services.
In addition, it publishes the calendar adjusted and the seasonally and calendar adjusted Turnover Index in the Service Sector, which allows for the calculation of rates of change between months of homogeneous duration and composition and without seasonal fluctuations. The adjustments are applied for all the series offered.
The Production Index in the Service Sector, which Idescat elaborates quarterly based on deflated gross value added, aims to track the evolution of activity in the service sector using the gross value added variable. This Index allows for the assessment of the weight of the trade sector based on trade margins rather than sales, and eliminates the influence of prices on economic activity, thereby isolating real growth (in volume).
The primary source of information is the continuous monthly survey carried out by the INE.
