SHD Demographic Historical Series

The Demographic Historical Series statistical operation compiles historical data from various sources regarding changes in the population and events involving the natural population movement in Catalonia.

It includes data from the hearth taxes (15th and 16th centuries) and the evolution of the actual population of Catalan municipalities from 1717 to 1991, the last year in which the population was subject to a headcount.

In addition, it provides counts on the number of births, deaths and marriages for Catalonia and for provinces (from 1858 to 1974). It also contains the following census data: population structure (from 1857 to 1970), marital status (from 1857 to 1970), place of birth (from 1877 to 1970), education (from 1860 to 1970), place of residence 10 years ago (1970), relationship with economic activity (from 1860 to 1970), female population according to the number of children born (from 1920 to 1970), family structures (1970) type of dwelling (1970 and 1980) and population by degree of urbanisation (1970). Finally, it provides information on migrations from 1961 to 1970.

These data are the result of the research carried out by Idescat in collaboration with the Centre of Demographic Studies of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The dwelling data come from the Ministry of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition.
