DEGURBA Statistics on Degree of Urbanisation

The aim of the Statistics on Degree of Urbanisation (DEGURBA) is to describe the territory according to the distribution of the population on an urban-rural continuum. The methodology for calculating the degree of urbanisation, proposed by Eurostat and supported by the United Nations, results in a standard distribution that makes it possible to compare statistics on an international level by degree of urbanisation. The basic level of the variable (level 1) assigns the administrative units of the territory to one of the three categories based on population density and population totals:

  • Urban centres or densely populated areas
  • Towns and semi-dense areas or intermediate density areas
  • Rural areas or thinly populated areas

The Statistics on Degree of Urbanisation offer the results for the 1 km² grid and the results for territorial administrative units broken down by provinces, municipalities, census tract groups and census tracts, which present the data on population, area, density of each territory and percentage of population residing in each of the three grid cell classifications. The results are also provided in the publication Maps and Data on the Degree of Urbanisation (DEGURBA) by year from 2018 to 2024 in vector GIS format (Shapefile) for each territorial administrative unit and for the 1 km² grid, which is compatible with the standard European grid.
