Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Natural population change
Increase or decrease in the population, which is obtained from the difference between births and deaths, for a specific period and territorial region.

Methodological aspects

The source for the natural population movement is declarations made in the Civil Register at the moment of registering a birth or death, when a statistical report of the event is provided.

Until 2011, the data refers to the registrations made in Catalonia of people who reside there. From 2012 onwards, it includes all events involving residents in Catalonia who have been registered in other autonomous communities.

The territorial breakdown is made by places of residence: for births, that of the mother; for deaths, that of the deceased.

Unavailable information is represented using the symbol ":". When the value is lower than that of the minimum unit to be able to estimate the statistical operation or if it effects statistical confidentiality, the symbol used is "..".
