Methodological note

Annual net income exhaustively includes monetary and non-monetary current household income, whether from individual or collective sources, deducting Personal Income Tax, wealth taxes, and compulsory Social Security contributions from employees, the self-employed and the unemployed (where applicable), as well as those from employers and inter-household transfers, in a calendar year corresponding to the year prior to the survey's reference period. The household income data have been produced using a mixed methodology that combines the information provided by respondents with administrative records from the Spanish Tax Agency and Social Security.

Results are presented for the average income per household, per person and per unit of consumption. In order to compare households with different sizes and compositions, equivalence scales are used, which convert the number of household resident members into the number of units of consumption. The equivalence scale used is the modified OECD scale, which assigns a value of 1 to the first adult, 0.5 to the rest of adults and 0.3 to children under 14 years of age.

The data for Catalonia comes from the Survey on Living Conditions. This is an annual statistical operation of INE, which Idescat uses to make a specific application of the results for Catalonia.

From 2016, as the result of an agreement signed with the INE to improve this statistic, Idescat carries out its own field work to extend the Survey with information from ore than 1,700 households; this means that the sample now includes more than 3,000 households and 7,300 individuals. The main objective of this extension is to improve the statistical validity of the results.
