Private schools providing regulated education in Catalonia generated a current revenue of 3,429 million euros during the 2020-2021 academic year, representing an increase of 20.2% compared to the 2014-2015 academic year. Their current expenditure amounted to 3,190 million euros, an increase of 18.8%. It should be noted that the economic values collected in this survey are nominal and do not account for the effects of inflation, i.e. the effect of prices.

The main sources of current revenue followed similar trends: fees paid by students (1,890 million euros) increased by 20.6% compared to the 2014-2015 academic year, and revenue from public subsidies and transfers (1,388 million euros) increased by 17.5% over the same period. Contributions from the public administration accounted for 40% of the schools' financial resources (50% for non-university schools, 9% for nursery schools and 8% for universities).

With regard to current expenditure, the highest cost was personnel (2,334 million euros, including self-employed teaching staff), which increased by 22.0% compared to the 2014-2015 academic year: This was followed by expenditure on goods and services (854 million euros), which increased by 10.7%.

In the 2020-2021 academic year, private regulated schools in Catalonia served 606,121 students, of whom 72.2% were non-university students, 24.5% were university students, and 3.3% were nursery school students.

The fees charged to pupils for educational and complementary services in non-university schools (excluding nursery schools) varied according to the type of agreement and ownership: Non-publicly subsidised private schools charged 7,263 euros per pupil, while publicly subsidised private schools charged 2,257 euros per pupil. Of these, the lowest total fee per pupil (1,963 euros) was charged by publicly subsidised religious schools, while the secular schools run by non-profit organisations charged the highest fee (3,686 euros per pupil).

Complementary services (school meals, transport, etc.) generated an income of 283 million euros for non-university private schools and 16 million euros for nursery schools, accounting for 23% and 22% of the total fees charged by these schools, respectively.

With regard to teaching staff, female teachers dominate at all stages prior to university education. In private nursery schools, 98.5% of the teaching staff (including self-employed staff members) are women. In non-university schools, 69.2% of staff members are female, while universities have more parity, with female teachers accounting for 43.2% of faculty members.
