The number of overnight stays in hotel establishments in Catalonia decreased by 1.5% year-over-year in December 2024, according to the Hotel Occupancy Survey. The number of domestic tourism overnight stays decreased by 5.0%: of these, Catalan travellers decreased by 8.2% and travellers from the rest of Spain by 0.8%. Foreign tourism overnight stays increased by 0.5% in year-over-year terms.
By country of origin, tourists from France, the United States and Italy were those with more overnight stays in absolute terms (209.7, 156.9 and 143.4 thousands, respectively), and registered positive year-over-year variations in Italy (1.4%) and negative in France (−11.7%) and in United States (−2.8%).
By tourism brands, Barcelona, Costa Barcelona and Costa Brava registered the highest number of overnight stays (1.5 million, 338.7 thousands and 192.5 thousands, respectively) and registered positive year-over-year variations in Barcelona (1.6%) and in Costa Brava (6.1%), and negative in Costa Brava (−21.9%).
Moreover, the number of travellers registered in hotel establishments grew by 0.2% year-over-year, with a decrease by 0.7% in domestic tourism and an increase by 0.9% in foreign tourism.
In 2024, overnight stays in hotel establishments increased by 3.3% in Catalonia according to provisional data from the Hotel Occupancy Survey. Overnight stays by domestic tourists decreased by 4.2% in comparison with the previous year (−6.5% for Catalan tourists and −1.3% for tourists from other parts of Spain), and foreign tourism increased by 6.4%. By tourism brands, Barcelona, Costa Brava and Costa Barcelona registered the higher number of overnight stays (23.3, 12.2 and 11.0 million respectively). In 2024 the room occupancy rate in Catalonia was 71.2%. The number of travellers increased by 1.7% in comparison with 2023.
