The population of Catalonia as of 1 January 2025 was 8,113,490 inhabitants, which represents an increase of 46,036 people during the second half of 2024, according to provisional data. In year-over-year terms with respect to 1 January 2024, the estimated growth is 101,259 inhabitants (1.3%).

By large age groups, the only one to decrease during the last six months of 2024 was the 0 to 15 age group which fell by 11,387 people. With respect to a year ago and in relative terms, this group was also down by 2.0%, while the population aged 16 to 64 rose by 1.7% and the population aged 65 and over increased by 2.3%.

By provinces, there was positive growth in all of them. The relative increase in population was highest in Lleida and Tarragona compared to a year ago with year-over-year growth of 1.5% in each of them.

In relation to the demographic indicators, the average age of the population is 43.71 years. There are 16.1 children aged 0 to 4 for every 100 women aged 15 to 49 (child-woman ratio) and 29.5 people aged 65 and over for every 100 inhabitants aged 15 to 64 (old age dependency ratio).

The advanced results of Population Estimates are available for Catalonia and the provinces, by sex and age from year to year. The results of 1 July 2024 and 1 January 2025 are provisional and will remain valid until the first quarter of 2026, when Idescat replaces them with the definitive Population Estimates, which are calculated once the Population Census numbers for the 2025 are available.
