Territorial Gross Domestic Product 2023 and Municipalities of more than 50,000 inhabitants 2024 Advance

(In Catalan)In 2023, 208 of the 222 municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants and the rest of the county capitals had positive growth in GDP per inhabitant. The municipalities with the highest increases were Martorell (51.9%), Arbúcies (26.7%) and Valls (23.6%), well above the Catalan average, which stood at 7.2%.
Martorell (206,550 euros per inhabitant) was the municipality with the highest GDP per inhabitant in 2023, followed by Vandellòs i l’Hospitalet de l’Infant (123,530 euros), Castellbisbal (113,553 euros), La Canonja (112,836 euros), Martorelles (103,980 euros) and Sant Esteve Sesrovires (100,433 euros). At the other end, there were 10 municipalities with a GDP per inhabitant below 15,000 euros: Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Torrelles de Llobregat, Vilanova del Camí, Calafell, Piera, Roda de Ter, Canyelles, Cunit, Santa Margarida de Montbui and Badia del Vallès.
By economic activity sector, there were 24 municipalities in which industry was the main economic activity, led by Martorell (86.5%) and La Canonja (82.5%).
The weight of the services in Catalonia was 75.1%, and the municipalities where this sector accounted for the highest weight over the total economic activity were Salou (94.7%) and Alella (92.1%). As for the gross value added (GVA) by economic activity sectors and, specifically, in construction, the municipalities with the highest weight over the gross value added (GVA) were Deltebre (19.3%) and Llagostera (18.3%). Finally, with regards to the agricultural sector, the municipalities with the highest weight over the total municipal GVA were Alcarràs (18.8%) and Sant Hilari Sacalm (17.2%).
In 2023, La Ribera d’Ebre was again the county with the highest GDP per inhabitant (71,546 euros), followed by El Barcelonès (44,769 euros). At the other end, El Baix Penedès was the county with the lowest GDP per inhabitant (21,178 euros).
Compared to the previous year, 37 counties increased their GDP per inhabitant in 2023. L’Alt Camp had the highest growth (19.2%), followed by El Baix Llobregat (13.1%) and Osona (12.6%). By contrast, the GDP per inhabitant decreased in La Terra Alta (−11.4%), La Ribera d’Ebre (−9.7%), El Pallars Sobirà (−6.2%), Aran (−3.5%) and L’Alta Ribagorça (−2.7%).
With respect to the GVA in the services sector, this was the main economic activity in 39 counties and Aran, while industry was the main activity in 4 counties: La Ribera d’Ebre (industry accounting for 70.8% over the total GVA), La Segarra (61.9%), L’Alt Camp (52.7%) and La Terra Alta (44.6%). The counties with the highest share of construction were La Cerdanya (14.1%) and El Baix Empordà (10.5%), where the share of GVA was more than double the Catalan average (5.0%). As for the agricultural sector, the counties with the highest shares of GVA were La Noguera (15.9%) and Les Garrigues (14.7%).
The 2024 advance of the GDP for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants show that all these municipalities had positive evolution in GDP per inhabitant compared to the previous year, led by Castelldefels (7.7%) and Mollet del Vallès (7.5%), while Rubí had the lowest increase (5.2%). The highest GDP per inhabitant values in 2024 were recorded in El Prat de Llobregat (€77,939), Sant Cugat del Vallès (€59,780) and Barcelona (€56,360).
