Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 02/2026

The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 78,615 people in February 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year, a figure that represents an increase of 2.2%, standing at 3,669,845 people. Contributors increased in all counties, except for L’Alta Ribagorça (−0.3%). The most notable increases, in relative terms, were those in El Baix Penedès (3.9%) and Osona (3.7%), although it should be noted that the latter is affected by the change in the county assignment of Aiguafreda.

In the municipalities of Catalonia, the number of contributors increased or remained stable in 84% of the municipalities (796 municipalities) compared to the same month of the previous year, while it decreased in the rest (151 municipalities). All municipalities with 50,000 inhabitants and over in Catalonia increased the number of contributors compared to a year ago, led in relative numbers by Manresa, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Vilanova i la Geltrú (3.3% in all three cases).

Compared to January, the number of contributors increased in Catalonia as a whole by 19,115 people (0.5%), doing so in 40 counties and Aran. The most notable growth was in La Selva (2.0%) and El Baix Empordà (1.5%).

By sex, and compared to a year ago, the number of women Social Security contributors in Catalonia as a whole increased by 37,755 and that of men by 40,860, which represents year-over-year increases of 2.2% in both cases.

In Catalonia as a whole, the number of contributors increased in all age groups, with the most notable increase in the group of contributors aged 55 and over at 5.1%, followed by those under 30 at 4.6%.

Foreign national contributors to Social Security increased in Catalonia as a whole by 4.2% compared to the same month of the previous year, doing so in all counties and Aran except for El Priorat (−3.1%). The number of Social Security contributors with Spanish citizenship increased in Catalonia as a whole by 1.7%, and also in 39 counties.

The number of Social Security affiliations stood at 3,863,355 in February, a figure that represents a 2.2% increase compared to a year ago (the same variation recorded for the number of contributors).

By sector, affiliations in the services sector registered a year-over-year increase of 2.7%, growing throughout the territory except for Aran, where they remained practically stable. In industry, affiliations increased by 1.6% in Catalonia as a whole and also did so in 36 counties and Aran. In the case of construction, affiliations decreased by 1.8% in Catalonia as a whole, and also in 25 counties, while they increased in 14 counties and remained stable in 3 counties and Aran. Affiliations in agriculture increased by 0.5%, with 270 more affiliations than a year ago.

It should be noted that variations may be affected by the fact that, from January 2026 onwards, the results of these statistics are presented using the new Catalan Classification of Economic Activities (CCAE-2025), which is a comprehensive revision of the previous classification structure (CCAE-2009) used for results until December 2025.

By type of working day, 19.3% of employee affiliations in February were part-time. In the case of women, the proportion was 25.9%, more than double that of men (12.7%).

Regarding temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security employee affiliations of a temporary nature stood at 9.8%. The counties with the highest level of temporary contracts were El Pallars Sobirà (14.5%) and La Ribera d’Ebre (14.1%), and the one with the lowest level was El Baix Empordà (7.7%).
