Population Estimates. S1/2026. Provisional data. Advance
The population of Catalonia as of 1 January 2026 stood at 8,210,710 inhabitants, representing an increase of 56,083 people during the second half of 2025, according to provisional data. In year-over-year terms with respect to 1 January 2025, the estimated growth was 86,584 inhabitants (1.1%).
By large age groups, the only one that declined during the last six months of 2025 was the 0 to 15 age group, which fell by 7,796 people. Compared to a year ago and in relative terms, this same group also fell by 1.9%, while the population aged 16 to 64 rose by 1.3% and the population aged 65 and over increased by 2.3%.
By provinces, all showed positive growth. Tarragona recorded the highest relative population increase compared to a year ago, with a year-over-year growth of 1.6%.
In relation to the demographic indicators, the average age of the population was 43.88 years. There were 15.7 children aged 0 to 4 per 100 women aged 15 to 49 (child-woman ratio) and 29.7 people aged 65 and over per 100 inhabitants aged 15 to 64 (old-age dependency ratio).
The advanced results of Population Estimates are available for Catalonia and the provinces, by sex and age year by year. The results as of 1 July 2025 and 1 January 2026 are provisional and will remain valid until the first quarter of 2027, when Idescat replaces them with the definitive Population Estimates, which are calculated once the Population Census figures for 2026 are available.
