Gender Equality Index. 2020, 2024 and 2025

In 2025, the Gender Equality Index (GEI) of Catalonia reached 68.7 points (full equality stands at 100), a figure representing an increase of 1.5 points compared to 2024.

As for the 6 domains into which the 27 indicators of the Index are structured, health showed the highest level of gender equality, with 84.0 points. It was followed, in decreasing order of score, by the domains of money (77.6), work (74.1), time (69.1) and knowledge (61.9). Finally, power obtained the lowest score (51.4).

Compared with the previous year, the improvement in the domains of power (+4.7) and money (+3.9) stands out, while the time domain also developed positively (+0.3). In contrast, gender equality in the knowledge domain experienced a setback (−2.1), as did the domains of work (−0.2) and health (−0.2). Compared with 2020, the GEI improved by 2.7 points, mainly due to the increase of 13 points in the power domain (from 38.4 points in 2020 to 51.4 in 2025).

Regarding the comparison with the European Union, Catalonia (68.7) stood above the European Union average (63.4). Specifically, it obtained better results than the EU average in 5 of the 6 domains, especially in the power domain (+10.9). In contrast, it scored lower than the European Union average in the health domain (−2.2). Compared to Spain as a whole, Catalonia scored higher in the domains of knowledge (+6.2), work (+4.7) and money (+4.3) and lower in the domains of power (−15.2), time (−5.0) and health (−2.2).

Note: The Index uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 100 is for total equality between women and men.

Idescat compiles the GEI for Catalonia following the methodology established by the European Institute for Gender Equality. Both the methodology and the list of indicators were updated in 2025, causing a break in series that precludes comparing the data with the previous series.

Idescat has also calculated the corresponding values for 2024 to analyse recent developments in Catalonia, although these data are not available for Spain or for the European Union as a whole. Likewise, it disseminates data for 2020 to facilitate comparability with EU countries, as this is the year for which the EIGE recalculated the figures retrospectively using the new methodology.
