Statistics on Household Consumer Expenditures. 2022

In 2022, the average consumption expenditure of Catalan households was 33,085 euros per household, 4.3% more than in 2021. The increase reached 9% in households made up of two adults with dependent children.

According to household composition, the average expenditure of households consisting of two adults with one or more dependent children grew by 9% per year and reached a value of €40,479 in 2022. On the other hand, the average expenditure of households consisting of one adult with one or more dependent children increased by 3.1% per year to reach 31,620 euros. As for households without children, households consisting of two adults increased consumption by 4.5% and had an average expenditure of 31,964 euros, while single-person households increased by 4.3% and reached 22,885 euros on average.

According to the characteristics of the main breadwinner, the highest average expenditure is that of households where the main breadwinner has higher education, which is 15.5% higher than that of Catalan households as a whole. On the other hand, households where the main breadwinner has at most primary education had an average expenditure 28.0% lower than that of all households. The lower expenditure of this latter group of households is mainly due to expenditure on goods and services that are not basic necessities, which is 50% lower than the average for all households.

On the other hand, households with a female main breadwinner had an average expenditure per household that was 6.0% lower than that of Catalan households as a whole. In the case of basic necessities, average expenditure was 3.3% lower than for all households, and for other goods it was 9.7% lower. On the other hand, when the main breadwinner is a man, average expenditure per household was 3.8% higher than for all households: 2.1% higher for basic necessities and 6.2% higher for other goods.

By expenditure group, the average expenditure per household in 2022 increased in all groups, except for housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (with a decrease of 1.9%, standing at 11,417 euros of average expenditure per household) and communications (with a decrease of 0.8%, standing at 1,016 euros). The highest increases in average expenditure per household were in the groups of leisure and culture (17.6%), restaurants and hotels (16.3%), transport (14.6%) and education (10.2%); the average expenditure per household in these groups was 1,556 euros, 2,547 euros, 3,459 euros and 735 euros, respectively.

In terms of physical quantities, Catalan households decreased their consumption of the main food products, except for the following products: cheese, yoghurt and other milk derivatives (9.4%), bread and cereals and meat (0.5%, both). As for beverages, there was a 13.0% increase in the consumption of mineral water, soft drinks, fruit, and vegetable juices. Beer consumption also increased (by 4.1% to 49.3 litres per household), although consumption of all other beverages decreased.

In terms of consumption of basic utilities, electricity supply increased (by 21.0%, representing 3,563.1 kWh on average per household) and city gas supply (by 1.7%, representing 415.2 m³ per household); in contrast, water supply decreased (by 21.0%, representing 143.6 m³) and liquefied gas (by 46.9%, representing 17.2 kg on average per household).
