The population of Catalonia has reached 8 million inhabitants, with an estimated figure of 8,005,784 inhabitants as of 1 November 2023, according to the advance population estimates. Of these 8 million inhabitants, 4,065,088 are women and 3,940,696 are men. 73.4% of the population of Catalonia resides in Barcelona, 10.7% in Tarragona, 10.2% in Girona and 5.6% in Lleida.

The population of Catalonia has increased from 6 to 8 million between 1987 and 2023. In this period, demographics have changed in several respects. For example:
- The proportion of the population over 65 has increased from 12.6% to 19.3%.
- The proportion of the population under 16 years of age has decreased from 22.8% to 15.3%.
- The population born in the rest of Spain has decreased from 32.3% to 15.2%.
- The foreign population has increased from 1.1% to 16.3%.
- The employment rate of women has grown from 26.5% to 50.9%.
- The average age of women at first birth has raised from 26.3 to 31.6 years.
- Life expectancy has increased from 77.2 to 83.6 years.
The Population Estimates provide information on the population as of 1 January and 1 July of each year. Together with the advance of the population as of 1 November 2023, provisional data are also disseminated on the estimated population as of 1 July 2023 by sex, age and provinces.
The estimated population of Catalonia as of 1 July 2023 was 7,970,428 inhabitants, according to provisional data from the Population Estimates. This figure represents a six-monthly increase of 71,372 inhabitants (0.9%) with respect to 1 January 2023.
