Methodological note

Methodological aspects

The objective of the Educational Attainment Statistics is to offer data on the studies of people aged 15 and over resident in Catalonia, in order to be able to characterise Catalan society in relation to their level of education. These statistics provide information on the highest level of education attained by the person, whether or not they were studying on the reference date. A person is considered to have reached a certain level of education when they have completed and passed all the courses at this level and are in a position to obtain the corresponding degree or diploma.

The data are obtained from the Statistical Population Register and from the statistical use of administrative registers and census-based statistical operations.

The classification used is the adapted CCED-2020 (A), which includes the following levels:

  • 01: Unlearned
  • 02: Partially completed primary education
  • 03: Primary education
  • 04: First stage of secondary education and similar
  • 05: Second stage of secondary education and similar, with general orientation
  • 06: Second stage of secondary education and similar, with professional orientation
  • 07: Post-secondary non-higher education
  • 08: Higher-level vocational training and training in plastic arts and design and sport and similar; university-certified programmes that require a baccalaureate degree of two years or more
  • 09: University bachelor's degrees of up to 240 ECTS credits, diplomas and expert-level or specialist university-certified programmes and similar
  • 10: University bachelor's degrees of more than 240 ECTS credits, undergraduate degrees and similar
  • 11: Master's degrees, residency-based specialisations in Health Sciences and similar
  • 12: University doctorate

This is the classification applied by the INE for the 2021 census. The adapted CCED-2020 (A) consists of 12 levels and is an extension of the Catalan Classification of Education according to the level of education attained, CCED-2020 (A), which has 9 levels.

The periodicity of the statistics is annual and with a reference date of 1 January each year.

Unavailable information is represented using the symbol ":". When the value is lower than that of the minimum unit to be able to estimate the statistical operation or if it effects statistical confidentiality, the symbol used is "..".
