Methodological note

Market Share Indicator of International Tourism in Catalonia is defined as the number of arrivals of foreign tourists (inbound tourism) that visits the Catalan territory divided by the number of arrivals of foreign tourists visiting the competing territory indexed with respect to 2010.

Catalonia as a territory forms part of the countries of the world as a whole, the EU-28 and Spain. In these cases, the market share indicator in relation to these territories is strictly defined as a market share. In relation to the other territories (countries of the EU and autonomous communities), it is defined as a relative increase or decrease in flows of foreign tourists between the two territories.

As opposed to what occurs with the relative prices indicator, an increase in the tourism market share indicator should be interpreted as an improvement in competitiveness. In the case of a specific territory, the index increases as long as the relative proportion of tourists that visit Catalonia is greater than the same proportion for the compared territory.

The tourism market share indicator is calculated on the basis of available official statistical sources:

  • To calculate the market share indicator between countries of the world and Catalonia, the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) produces its quarterly World Tourism Barometer, which provides the number of inbound foreign tourists for different countries of the world. For Catalonia, the data is obtained from the Inbound Tourism Survey (Frontur) produced by the Institute of Tourism Studies (IET).
  • To calculate the market share indicator between countries of the European Union (EU-28) and Catalonia, Eurostat provides figures for the number of foreign tourists registered in hotel establishments in each member state. For Catalonia, the data is obtained from the INE's Hotel Occupancy Survey.
  • To calculate the market share indicator between autonomous communities and Catalonia, the INE provides figures for the number of foreign tourists registered in hotel establishments for each autonomous community.

The countries included in each of the areas are:

  • Countries of the European Union (UE-28): Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden and Cyprus.
  • Countries of the world: the above plus Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, South Korea, Costa Rica, Cuba, Egypt, United States, Philippines, Georgia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Malaysia, Morocco, Montenegro, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Russia, Serbia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and China.

This indicator is offered in gross and trend terms. In the latter case it is calculated as a mobile mean of the last four quarters.
