Idescat has published the definitive data of the Marriage Statistics for 2016. That year, 29,355 marriages were recorded in Catalonia. Compared with 2015, marriages had increased 6.4%.
The Marriage Statistics provide annual information on married couples and spouses who establish their residence in Catalonia, according to demographic and social characteristics. The data is territorially disaggregated by municipality, county, area of the Territorial Plan and province.
The original source of the data is the statistical bulletin on marriage, which is filled in by the spouses when registering the marriage in the Civil Registry.
Until 2011, the data presented referred to registrations made in Catalonia of married couples who established their residence in Catalonia. As of 2012, the data has been reported annually in two phases: the provisional data (based on married couples residing in Catalonia registered with civil registries of Catalonia) and the definitive data (based on married couples residing in Catalonia registered in both civil registries of Catalonia and other autonomous communities).
The Marriage Statistics, together with the statistics on births and deaths, form part of the Natural Population Movement Statistics which Idescat produces in collaboration with the National Institute for Statistics and the Ministry of Health.
