The number of contributory Social Security pensions received by residents of Catalonia totalled 1,683,463 as of 31 December 2017. The counties with the most contributory pensions per ten inhabitants were El Berguedà and El Ripollès (3.5) and the counties with the fewest pensions per ten inhabitants were L’Aran (1.6), La Cerdanya, L’Alt Empordà and El Tarragonès (1.8).
The average contributory pension of residents of El Barcelonès was the highest in December 2017 (1,053 euros). This county, together with El Baix Llobregat, El Tarragonès, El Garraf and El Vallès Oriental, was the only one which exceeded the average pension for the whole of Catalonia (972 euros). Residents of La Terra Alta received the lowest pensions (686 euros). These were followed by the pensions in Les Garrigues and El Pallars Sobirà (719 euros) and El Priorat (720 euros).
By type of pension, 64.4% of the contributory pensions in Catalonia were for retirement, with an average monthly pension of 1,100 euros in December 2017. La Terra Alta, El Priorat and La Garrotxa were the counties which recorded the most retirement pensions in proportional terms. In addition, widows’ pensions accounted for 23.0% of the total number of pensions, with an average monthly amount of 663 euros. By counties, L’Alta Ribagorça, El Pallars Sobirà and La Noguera recorded the highest proportions.
By municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, Sant Cugat del Vallès was the one with the highest average pension in December 2017 (1,211 euros), followed by Tarragona (1,094 euros) and Barcelona (1,081 euros). In contrast, Palafrugell, Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Lloret de Mar recorded the lowest average pensions (802, 805 and 806 euros, respectively).
The objective of the Statistics on Pensions is to provide information on the number of pensions and the mean contributory pension of the Social Security (on 31 December of the reference year), of the resident inhabitants in Catalonia. The data is presented by affiliation schemes and types of pension, according to the sex and age of the recipient. This statistic is drawn up annually and is geographically broken down by municipalities, provinces, counties, areas, and for Catalonia. Idescat draws up this statistic based on the administrative file of pensions of the National Social Security Institute and the Social Marine Institute .
