In-house R&D expenditure in Catalonia totalled 3,273.4 million euros in 2017, representing an increase of 5.5% over the previous year, according to the provisional data of the Statistics on Research and Development (R&D) Activities. This figure accounts for 1.47% of the GDP, standing 0.02 points above the previous year (1.0% in relative terms). This rise can be explained by the increase recorded in the Businesses sector and Private non-profit sector (3.0%), while the Public Administration and Higher education sectors recorded respective falls of 0.9% and 2.3%.
In terms of personnel, a total of 48,551.3 people equivalent to full-time conducted in-house R&D activities, an increase of 4.2% in comparison with 2016. Of the above people, 42.0% were women, and female participation was highest in the Public Administration sector, standing at 53.5%.
