Unemployment decreases in Catalonia by 12,100 people in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the previous year (−2.6%) standing at 446,600 unemployed persons, with an unemployment rate of 11.64% (0.6 points less than the previous year) according to the Active Population Survey. By sex, the year-over-year decline in unemployment for women is higher than that of men (−3.7% and −1.5%, respectively). By ages, stands out the decrease in the group of 55 years and over (−8.8%).

The number of households with all its active members unemployed in the first quarter of 2019 decreases by 5,600 (−4.0%) with respect to the same period of the previous year, and stands at 136,600 households.

The number of employed persons increases by 87,700 individuals, totalling 3,391,000 people, 2.7% higher than the same period of the previous year. By sector, comparing employment in year-over-year terms, the increase in employed persons corresponds to the service sector (98,200 persons; 4.1%), while decreases in agriculture (6,000 persons; −10.7%) and construction (5,500 persons; −2.7%). Industry remains practically stable (1,000 persons; 0.2%). By sex, employment increases for woman a 3.1% and for men a 2.2%. As for age groups, the greatest increase in employment in comparison to the previous year occurs in young people from 16 to 24 (10.7%) followed by population from 55 and more (7.8%). Regarding type of workday, part-time employment increases a 3.4%, while the increase in full-time employment is of 2.5%. Among the employees, the increase in permanent contracts (3.8%) is higher than in temporary contracts (3.2%).

With regard to specific sectors, the employed persons in the cultural sector increases by 7.6% in the year-over-year, totalling 179,600 people (5.3% of the total employment rate). By sex, the cultural sector employs 93,200 men and 86,400 women.

In the tourism sector,the number of employed persons increases by 3.1% with respect to the first quarter of 2018, totalling 439,200 people (13.0% of the entire working population). By sex, the tourism sector employs 251,700 men and 187,600 women.

The ICT sector employs 106,500 people in the first quarter of 2019 (4.6% less than one year ago), representing 3.1% of the total employment rate.
