Statistics on Contributory Pensions. Social Security Pensioners. 2018

In December 2018, 1,498,196 pensioners pensioners residing in Catalonia received contributory pensions from the Social Security, in other words, 19.7% of the population. The number of pensions stood at 1,701,954, a figure indicating that pensioners received an average number of 1.14 pensions. For the first time, Idescat is presenting data on pensioners within the Statistics on Contributory Pensions, a series which it has been publishing since 2011.

By age groups, we should highlight that of pensioners aged between 65 and 79 (51.7% of the total), followed by those aged 80 and above (27.1% of the total) and between 50 and 64 (15.5% of the total). By sex, the number of women receiving contributory pensions was higher than that of men (51.1% compared with 48.9%), but this majority of women among pensioners was due exclusively to the number aged 80 and above, 60.7% of whom were women, as there were more men than women in the other age groups.

Pensioners who received 1,000 euros or less accounted for 52.5% of the total, those who received between 1,001 euros and 2,000 euros accounted for 34.5% of the total and those who received more than 2,000 euros accounted for 13.0% of the total number of pensioners. Since 2011 the number of pensioners receiving less than 1,000 euros has fallen (it dropped by a year-over-year figure of 3.2% between 2017 and 2018). On the other hand, those receiving more than the above amount have increased in number by 6.3% in the same period.

The gross amount received by pensioners in December 2018 stood at an average of 1,145 euros. When a distinction is made between the sexes, we can observe the inequality between men (1,338 €) and women (961 €).

By counties, El Barcelonès (1,235 €), El Tarragonès (1,188 €) and El Baix Llobregat (1,183 €) were those counties where pensioners received the highest average monthly amounts. At the other end of the scale stood the counties of La Terra Alta (829 €), Les Garrigues (860 €) and El Priorat (880 €).

By municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants, Sant Cugat del Vallès (1,393 €), Barcelona (1,276 €) and Tarragona (1,263 €) were those where pensioners received the highest average monthly amounts. At the other end of the scale stood Lloret de Mar (929 €), Amposta (948 €) and Palafrugell (953 €).
