Retail Commerce Index. 03/2020

The General Retail Trade Index (ICD) without service stations, at current prices, decreased by 15.6% on a year-over-year basis in Catalonia in March 2020. By type of product, food increased by 5.7% on a year-over-year basis and the rest of products decreased by 33.6%. Within this type, personal equipment goods decreased by 54.3%, household equipment goods by 28.9% and the other goods by 22.6% compared to the same month of the year before. In the same period, the General Index of Retail Commerce with service stations, at current prices, showed an decrease of 18.0% compared to a year ago.

Since 14 March 2020, when the state of alarm was announced, the opening to the public of retail premises and establishments has been suspended, with the exception of food, beverages, essential goods and items, pharmaceuticals, medication, optical and orthopaedic items, hygiene products, printed media and stationery, fuel for automotive vehicles, tobacconists, technological and telecommunications equipment, food for pets and ecommerce conducted by telephone or mail order (Article 10.1 of Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, announcing the state of alarm to manage the healthcare crisis due to COVID-19). This fact has produced an unprecedented situation in the Survey data collection. Despite the closure of these establishments during the second half of March and the resulting difficulty in collecting information, the response rate was not significantly affected compared with a normal month, and so it is considered that the estimated data can be published.
