The number of overnight stays spent at campsites in Catalonia decreased by 29.3% in the first quarter of 2020 on the year-over-year data, according to the provisional data from the Campsite Occupancy Survey.
As to the origins of such tourism, domestic campers decreased by 27.8%: tourism from Catalonia decreased by 27.4% and the tourism from the rest of Spain by 39.3%; with regards to the foreign tourism it decreased by 32.3%. Furthermore, the year-over-year figures for the number of travellers registred at campsites decreased by 33.9%.
The entry into force of the Order SND/257/2020, of 19 March, declaring the suspension of opening to the public of tourist accommodation establishments in accordance with Article 10.6 of Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, whereby a state of alarm is declared for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19, has produced an unprecedented situation in the collection of survey data. In addition to the progressive closure since 19 March and the total suspension of activity from 26 March, there is the difficulty of collection information due to the closure of establishments, which has reduced the response rate and the quality of the estimated data compared with a normal month. For this reason, data are offered for Catalonia but not for the tourist brands.
