Indicators of Service Sector Activity. Indexes of Production and Turnover. Q1/2020

The Production Index in the Service Sector (IPROSS) (base 2015=100) decreased by 7.2% on year-over-year data in Catalonia in the first quarter of 2020. Furthermore, the Turnover Index (IASSVN) also showed a decrease of 5.4% with respect to one year ago, since trade decreased by 4.5% and the other services (this is to say, all except for trade) decreased by 6.8%. Within the other services, all sectors decreased, except for administrative activities and auxiliary services (1.6%); the most notable decreases were in the accommodation sector (−21.6%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities (−9.2%).

The entry into force of Royal Decree 463/2020, of 14 March, whereby a state of alarm is declared for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19, restricts people's freedom of movement (art. 7) and suspends the opening to the public of retail premises and establishments, with certain exceptions (art. 10.1), hostelry activities (art. 10.4) with the exceptions set out in the Order TMA/227/2020, of 23 March, and in the Order TMA/305/2020, of 30 March, and restaurant activities, which are only permitted to provide home delivery services. This fact has produced an unprecedented situation in the activity of the services sector since the second half of the month of March. Despite this circumstance, the response rate has been very acceptable, so the quality of the indicators is similar to that of any other period.
